Spotlight Case: Cancer, Courage, and Coming Home to Self

She came to me emotionally overwhelmed — a woman in her 40s, carrying not just the weight of a recent breast cancer diagnosis, but decades of silent trauma, shame, and grief. Her eyes told the story her words struggled to hold.

She had suffered sexual abuse in her past. Then came a wave of heartbreaks: a miscarriage after being told her unborn baby would not be “normal.” When her second pregnancy brought the same diagnosis, she chose to keep the baby. He was born with disabilities.

This mother carried silent guilt and immense sadness — not just for her children, but for herself. Her voice cracked as she whispered:

“I must have done something wrong.”

But the emotional pain didn’t end there. Her father, mother, and brother-in-law had all died of cancer. So when her own diagnosis came, her belief was locked in:

“Cancer means death.”

She was paralysed with fear when doctors recommended chemotherapy. That’s where our journey began — not just as coach and client, but as two souls walking together through the storm.

The Work We Did

Using the Root Cause Analysis framework and ongoing EFT (Emotional Freedom Techniques) sessions, we began addressing the deep-rooted fears, shame, and grief, meeting each emotion, one by one.

Her first breakthrough came when she chose to proceed with chemotherapy — not from pressure, but from a place of inner strength.

Then something remarkable happened. She called me one day, mid-treatment. Her voice was steady, her tone calm:

“Salma, I’m telling myself — my body is in healing mode. This chemo is a blessing, not poison. And I don’t feel the pain anymore.”

Her mindset shift was so powerful, it was visibly impacting her biology.

A Year of Deep Inner and Outer Healing

Throughout the year, I stayed closely connected — before chemo, after each dose, through every emotional high and low. She eventually decided to remove her breast. It wasn’t easy, but it was intentional and rooted in self-worth rather than fear.

She’s also a part of our circle, which allowed us to weave spiritual insight with emotional release. Her entire perception of cancer began to shift.

  • From curse… to calling

  • From punishment… to pause.

  • From fear… to faith.

She told me: I admit I have mistreated myself. Now it’s time to truly look after me.

A Therapist’s Reflection

This wasn’t just her healing journey — it became part of mine.

This was one of the most demanding, soul-stretching cases of my career. There were sessions that triggered my own wounds. Times when I felt overwhelmed, exhausted, even emotionally shaken.

So I took my own healing steps during her journey — my own tapping sessions, quiet pauses, and emotional resets. Because yes — therapists are human too. We absorb. We ache. We carry.

But we also rise.

What I Learned

When a woman buries her emotions, silences her pain, and starves her self-worth… those unresolved energies become clutter inside the body.

And I now deeply believe:

Cancer is not just a disease.

It is the healing peak of the body — but only when the emotional clutter is acknowledged and released.

Healing isn’t just about killing bad cells. It’s about creating space for life to return.

Today

  • She is out of danger.

  • She still attends sessions.

  • She still does her emotional work.

  • She still shows up for herself.

And I still feel honoured to have witnessed the power of what happens when a woman declares:

“I choose to live — fully, gently, and with my whole self.”

Key Reflections from This Case

  • When emotions stay buried, the body finds ways to speak.

  • Healing is not just medical — it’s emotional, spiritual, and deeply personal.

  • A mother’s self-worth is vital — not just for her family, but for her survival.

  • Therapy isn’t just for the client — it transforms the healer too.
