October is Depression Awareness Month: But Do We Need a New Label?

Every October, we see posts, talks, and campaigns about Depression Awareness Month. And yet, despite so much awareness, more and more people are saying, “I feel depressed.”

It makes us wonder: If awareness is everywhere, why does depression still feel like it’s everywhere too?

Did People in the Past Not Feel Depression?

Our parents and grandparents faced grief, losses, struggles, wars, and financial hardships. Of course, they carried heavy burdens. But here’s the difference:

They didn’t label every hardship as depression.

They leaned into connection — with family, faith, nature, and meaning.

They looked for ways forward rather than getting lost in the "WORD".

The Power of Labels on the Brain

Science shows that the way we label an experience changes how the brain responds.

Call it depression → the brain reacts with heaviness, stuckness, hopelessness.

Call it a challenge → the brain activates problem-solving and resilience.

Call it a journey → the brain thinks in terms of movement and progress.

Call it an adventure → the brain becomes curious and engaged in discovery.

In other words: change the label, change the brain.

Beyond Depression Awareness: Towards Perspective Awareness

Awareness of depression is important. But awareness alone is not enough. If we only focus on the word depression, we may unintentionally reinforce the very feeling we want to overcome.

What if we shifted the spotlight?

Instead of only “Depression Awareness”… we grow:

  • Resilience Awareness

  • Gratitude Awareness

  • Faith Awareness

  • Joy Awareness

Because the more we focus on what uplifts us, the more our brain, heart, and body align with healing.

A New Label for a New Perspective

So the next time you feel weighed down, try shifting the label:

Instead of “I’m depressed” → say “I’m in a tough season.”

Instead of “I’m stuck” → say “I’m in a challenge.”

Instead of “I’m broken” → say “I’m in discovery.”

You’ll notice your brain — and your body — begin to respond differently.

Closing Thought

Depression is real, and struggles are valid. But we are not powerless. By changing the way we name our pain, we change the way we navigate it.

This October, let’s not just raise depression awareness. Let’s raise perspective awareness — because sometimes, a new label can be the first step toward a new life.
